Perspective

SPS views client issues in a systematic and strategic manner. However, within the strategy and subset issues the shortest distance between two points (i.e. Problem > Solution) is always important to identify at the task level. ‘Occam’s Razor’ principle—the analytical principle of economical problem solving—always applies in SPS projects. One-page summaries of projects are created establishing client objectives and SPS work.

Deeper planning and execution methods follow as needed. Projects need to be verified for alignment with the client’s strategic plan and compatibility with successful past projects and emerging ones. This is strategic project management.

Projects come in many shapes and sizes. One thing in common is that a systematic approach is needed to efficiently break down the issues and take effective action in an expeditious manner.

Basics like PDCA are used to monitor success. Once success criteria is established in the planning stage is achieved and project completion is verified, audits and lesson learned are included in an SPS project report. Such reporting includes project details associated with any required project procurement issues. Anything less than project success for the client is avoided, particularly when Quality and Risk Management techniques are used. Needlessly expending resources beyond established milestones and/or stage gates is also prevented through proper documentation and information control. This is part of a monitoring and control process.

Among the advantages of engaging a competent strategic consultant is an 'Eagle Eye' view of the situation(s) to be analyzed. A systems perspective sees the situation, as well as other items feeding into, or in the background of, the presented problem and the project activity to solve it. Clients often understand all aspects of their issues, it’s simply that when certain SPS strengths are applied it can become easier to identify and implement the right solution.Often the obvious case at hand and its subset activities as presented remain the only issues at hand. However, SPS vigilantly looks for unintended consequences and risk. With agreed upon change and communication management structures, new opportunities can be strategically adopted, while the unforeseen and emerging risks are better mitigated. SPS is always ready to introduce our innovation and systems perspective, but we also enjoy simply 'doing' the straightforward items with precision and vigor.

Sustainability and community innovations are central to the SPS mission. Throughout history, innovation has been a double-edged sword. Innovation should be about things that are good for us and that are still profitable. SPS appreciates working with ventures interested in adding real value to the world we all live in.

What is an SPS engagement like?

Preferably client time issues are flexible enough so that some preliminary conversations and exercises can occur in order to best identify problems, devise strategies and map out possible tactics. Central to the SPS mission is bringing client strategies and business models into harmony for sustainability and devising high value projects to support the client value statement.

The systems and methodologies SPS co-creates with clients is part of the 'leave behind' value spinoff stemming from the new opportunities developed with the aid of SPS. Along with sustainability through innovation and communications, personal and professional client development at the individual, team and organizational levels are crucial in growing organizations.

SPS is pleased to take on roles and responsibilities at a high level, however SPS is available to support internal initiatives, or those being implemented through third parties. SPS not only relies on over 15 years of business experience, but also advanced entrepreneurial and other management science practices used by competitive, relevant organizations. Project management essentials are particularly emphasized at SPS.

Design techniques and systems thinking in addition to an extensive management science knowledgebase and collaborative network support SPS client engagements. Based on project scope, internal and external collaborations may be part of optimum client solution design. Straightforward problem-solving, creativity and innovation methods are combined to analyze issues and form plans in the client-SPS project development phase.

SPS Project System Principles

The SPS mission is not to change (transform) organizations; instead SPS effectively works within functional aspects preexisting in the organization and helps to clarify ineffective areas. SPS understands the importance of project design economy in today’s market spaces. SPS helps to develop and execute new initiatives while leaving behind repeatable project templates, new organization programs and business units. Transformation and quality management processes for the sake of such theories can waste resources and energy.
